This page was last edited on 31 Decemberat The first three chapters of the text prepublication version 1 were used in the fall of ’77 by Carver Mead at Caltech and Carlo Sequin at U. Scans of system originals of all three drafts of the text are posted online in this VLSI Archive in PDF formatenabling readers to reconstruct the progress of the work on the evolving design methods and text.
This introducction triggered a breakthrough in education. For this reason, Carver Meadwho coined the term “Moore’s law”, called for a separation of design from technology throughout the s in order to establish electronic design automation EDA as its own discipline developing its own methodologies. It was the first VLSI design textbook for non-technologists.
The authors intended the book to fill a gap in the literature and introduce electrical engineering and computer science students to integrated system architecture. An important milestone that followed was the Multi Project Chip MPC concept that allowed multiple designs to be fabricated on a single wafer, greatly reducing cost to the point that students’ design exercises and prototypes could be fabbed in small numbers.
These drafts were self-published on the laser printing systems at Xerox PARC, and used to document and evolve bh Mead-Conway design methods prior to the book’s publication by Addison-Wesley in the fall of A draft of the full nine chapters of the text prepublication version 3 was completed in the summer of and used in courses at Caltech and U.
Many of the pages in the drafts contain dated filenames for printed files, enabling changes to be tracked over time.
The final draft of the textbook was compiled from accumulated revisions of version 3, and published by Addison-Wesley in the fall ofjust in introductlon for courses at many universities that fall and thus in time for MPC Many of them also obtained a copy of Lynn Conway ‘s notes for her famous MIT course inwhich included a collection of exercises.
